A Bolder Life

Hiking into Haleakala

Not ones to shy away from adventure, Perrin and I just organized a backpaking trip into Haleakala crater. It is an absolutely amazing place. The views were awe inspiring and so was the fact that were traversing through a dormant volcano. There were no active vents like the craters on the big island, but everywhere you looked it was evident you were in a volcano.

Sarah, Maceo, and Erin Rinker joined us on our excursion and they also provided our entertainment. We saw plenty of silverswords and even were lucky enough to see one blooming. Silverswords only grow on Haleakala. We also saw some nesting nene geese. There are only a few hundred nene left and somehow some were transplanted to the crater.

We hiked 7 miles into the cabin descending over 3 thousand feet. Coming out was only 4 miles but it was nearly 2000 feet up. Nothing to scoff at. But we all came out with grins on our faces and only Rinker has blisters to prove she was there.

I've never felt more like Frodo in my life, hiking into the darkest depth of Mordor. Fortunately for me I was with a girl so fair. And Gollum and the evil one failed to take her away from me.

Lots of photos

Glad to see you were practicing your card skills. Did you give out trophies?
