A Bolder Life

Area Man Killed By Shark

Sharks live in the ocean. It is their home. They feed on seals and turtles. And sometimes in murky water it is hard to tell the difference between a surfer and a turtle.

That is exactly what happened yesteday morning at 7:08 AM at S-Turns here in Maui. A local man died of massive blood loss following a single shark bite. Fellow surfers tried to save him, but were unsucessful. This happened less than a quarter mile away from our house. My respect for the ocean just continues to grow.

One more thing, I was out paddling with the Lahaina Canoe Club on Wednesday morning we paddled all the way up to S-Turns and got there at about 7:25. We did not see much commotion, but were confused that no one was surfing on the clean waves. We hopped out of our boats and swam around to cool off for a while before we headed back where we found out about the shark attack. We were 100 yard away from where the shark attack ocurred. Is it possible to have retroactive fear?

Marc, I'm so happy that you weren't breakfast! I'd miss you!

It's probably not a good idea to wear those matching 'wounded seal' costumes you two have, when you're in the water.

That's a harsh way to go, I'm sorry that guy lost his life.

I think it is very possible to have retroactive fear. In fact, I am experiencing 'Long Distance Fraternal Displaced Retroactive Fear™'

Don't surf there.

This makes a mother VERY nervous, especially having seen the area just last week! Looked OK then. The depths of the ocean can be scary however. I thought I was OK when you told me the story but since then, not so good. Please be careful!
