Hawaiian 101

Despite the fact that it was illegal to speak Hawaiian for 150 years the language survived and is still used in everyday conversation.

Pupu: Please don't giggle or look disgusted when your server asks if you would like to start with a pupu. It just means appitizer. Our favorite here is Poke (po-kay) which is raw fish, seaweed, shoyu (soy sauce) and a varitiety of other optional ingredients. It is often eaten with poi which is good if you dip something "ono" into it.

Ono: Delicious and it is also the Hawaiian name for wahoo fish.

No ka oi: the best. Maui no ka oi (obviously) and Marc no ka oi.

Keiki (kay-key): Kid; as in Keiki menu including small fish and chips or keiki bananna trees which are left behind when an adult tree produces fruit and then dies.
